THE HODGEMOOR CHALLENGE
Latest standings

The Hodgemoor Challenge Trophy is a year-long challenge, which started in 2010 and continues every year, designed to encourage riders of all talents to compete in a variety of disciplines in the local area. The perpetual trophies (which have been donated by Susie and Marcus) are for Top Rider, Top Junior and for Special Achievement; the winner retains the trophy for a year and engraves their name and their horse's name. The top 3 places (open and junior) and the special achievement winner  get a smaller replica trophy to keep (see our picture of all the trophies).

We are pleased that local companies are offering additional prizes and we will announce them during 2012 when confirmed.

The disciplines will include all those with which we have been successful over the last few years, for a total of 12 to 20 events on weekends and the occasional midweek evening, including
• Show-jumping
• Dressage and dressage to music,
• Cross-country (including a mini totaliser in our cross country field),
• One-day eventing or combination of two disciplines,
• Mounted Games and Le Trec

The Challenge runs from January through September, with the awards being presented at our annual get-together in October each year. The programmes for 2011 and 2012 are being grouped into one contest because of the low number of events in 2011. The calendar will be kept up to date on http://www.hodgemoor.org.uk/events.htm

Scoring is as follows (subject to changes up to the first event):
1) Any amateur rider can join the Hodgemoor Riding Association and contest the Challenge without further formality.
2) You can enter the Challenge at any moment in the year and your previous scores, if properly reported by the event organiser, and subject to (3) below, will count.
3) Your 2 worst scores will be dropped if you contest 10 or more events, and 1 score will be dropped if you contest 5 or more events. This helps those that cannot turn out for every event.
4) Every event will have the same weighting in the scoring.
5) A horse and rider combination that competes twice in an event, in different classes, scores the average of their scores.
6) If there are classes, each class would carry the same amount of points; this means that a less experienced rider has the same chance of winning overall as an expert. Experienced riders will be asked not to enter a junior class, based on their own declarations and our knowledge of their performance in the recent past.
7) Any rider can compete on more than one horse; the horse and rider combination defines the accumulation of points.
8) Each rider can play one joker in the year. A letter or email to us, in advance of the event, will suffice for the marks scored at that event to be doubled (but not verbally to the organiser on the day).
